Belaire: When Synth-Pop Covers Rap

Belaire!
B  E  L  A  I  R  E

I am not too sure when I first heard of Belaire. It could have been October 6, 2005, but then again it could have been sometime else. But I first heard them in December 2005, or sometime around then. Anyway, all I know is the first song of theirs I ever heard was “Through the Wire”… A cover of a Kanye West song. I liked it. It was dancable. It was different. It had a female vocalist that I could stand.

So, the next time I was in Austin (this was back when I lived in good ol’ San Antone) I went to Waterloo Records to purchase Belaire’s self-titled EP. Okay, so it wasn’t all rap covers… But I still liked it. It made me happy, because not only was the music good it was hand-made: The cover was painted by hand, which automatically gave it +5 Special points. Soon after, my friend Lily told me that Belaire had broken up. I didn’t want to believe her, and their Myspace page didn’t say anything about it, so I pretended that she had never told me this.

And it’s a good thing I did, because today Blaire releases their first LP, Exploding, Impacting. I will be going to the CD release show tonight at Emo’s. It will be a treat because I have never seen Belaire live.

Music video featuring kittens and Spoon.

July 5, 2007 at 7:23 pm (cats, music, spoon)

I was going to make this an entry about how my mom is more “with it” than me these days, seeing how she knew about Spoon’s new music video for “The Underdog” before I did, but I cannot find that video on YouTube or Google to post, so I’m posting this video and talking about something else:

Cats are cute. I really like cats. I also really like Spoon. That is why I posted this video. This video has gotten pretty popular, so I guess you can’t go wrong with kittens and Spoon. Perhaps that is why at the end of “The Underdog” a guy is passed out on the floor on top of a kitten stuffed toy: Spoon has observed what it takes to make a sucessful music video. I mean, does anyone remember the actual music video for “Sister Jack”? Nope, didn’t think so.

I pre-ordered Spoon’s new album but still haven’t gotten it yet, so I hope it is waiting for me in the mail tomorrow.

Anyway, welcome to my new blog! I plan to focus mostly on music (made by people who are not me) and/or photography/art (made by me). So, it will be a breath of fresh air for those of you who know my other blogs. No “I love my job, but hate what I work for” posts here!

Coming tomorrow, I plan to write a post on the band Belaire. Stay tuned for that… I’m sure everyone will want to read my boring writings on unknown bands. (That’s the purpose of a blog, right?)
